I love everything but mostly let's be a dick to all the mages. I'd love for her to end up with a slow burn friendship with one of them despite herself at some point.

History

Born in Tevinter to a non-magic family in Minrathous. Parents served as servants to a Magister, who had the misfortune of disagreeing with the Archon, and therefore he - and his entire household - was assassinated. Nerva and her younger brother survived after they were smuggled out by a friend of their mother's, but both her parents and her older brother were caught in the slaughter. She was 8, her brother was 6. Her mother's friend put them in a Caravan bound for Orlais, and she has never been back since.

Raised in various households as a servant through her youth, working for her keep, and for her brother's. Was schooled by a sister in the Chantry, the only safe place she really had. Not all of her homes were good ones, and her primary goal was to protect her younger brother, so she learned to fist fight at a young age and got in lots of trouble. Thus the Chantry became a haven for her, with its soft talking sisters and it's sure purpose. The fact that it helped her to understand the evil that happened to her family, and that infected Tevinter, only helped to hone her purpose.

When she was 20 and her brother was 18, they had a massive fight that ended in blows and him leaving for Tevinter to find revenge for their family, and saw Nerva alone in Orlais with nothing and no one save the Chant. She was taken pity upon by a templar who encouraged her to join the order, she enlisted and followed him throughout his career until finally he became knight commander of one of the Orlesian Circles, where she lived and worked until the Mage Rebellion. As he broke of from the Chantry like many of the Templars, she initially followed him, but he himself was slowly changing and the righteousness and honour she had so loved and admired was disappearing into cruelty and oppression - which she barely even realised until she found the blood beginning to stain her own gauntlets, as well. After she slaughtered a group of rebel mages under his order, she came to her senses, disgusted with herself, and escaped without ever facing her mentor for his crimes.

She came seeking the Inquisition immediately after, to help end the chaos.

Personality

Nerva is, to put it in the most concise way possible, a zoo keeper for mages. She is generally taciturn, has a short fuse and an old and bitter rage that runs deep and taints everything that she does. Beyond that rage, however, is a very genuine desire for peace - for herself, and for those that she believes need her protection. She has no desire to see mages (or certain politicians) as people - believing that the power inevitably breeds corruption within them, and the only method of ensuring that she herself is not corrupted by them is to constantly keep the moral high ground.

She keeps violence as a last resort - though she is fluent in it, it's also a part of her that she finds distasteful. A corruption of her own, perhaps. She spends a good deal of her time when working in a circle ensuring the safety of the Tranquil - who she sees as selfless people who have sacrificed much to ensure the safety of both themselves and everyone around them. (The fact that she also envies their peaceful state, and ability to leave the past behind them, also helps.)

She is, quite frankly, deeply broken, with wounds too old for her to even understand let alone fix. The Chantry did its best, but the trauma still has lingering effects, including nightmares, night terrors, insomnia, and flashbacks.

She can be incredibly, incredibly loyal - but to individuals, rather than organizations. She's more likely to like the ideal of an organization than it's actual regulations, and she has little patience for hypocrites or those who would boast instead of act.

She finds her joy in the things that take her away from herself and her past, especially in the finery and majesty of Orlesian culture. She loves delicate, refined clothing and masks, even if she does not feel she can wear them. She can't make a joke to save her life and tends to assume anyone flirting with her is making fun of her.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: Magical nullification and demon killing - specifically fighting with a sword and a very long, tall shield. Endurance training, swimming, drawing, carving and some silverwork.

Weaknesses: Anything that requires a sense of humor, cooking, interpersonal relationships, any kind of dancing. She also sometimes gets flashbacks and intense migraines.

Inventory

Templar Armour, sword, shield, lyrium kit, dagger, boots, a small book, ink, quill, a set of carving knives.

Motivation

After watching the Templar Order imploding on itself and going almost literally insane, she believes that the Inquisition may be the only chance Thedas has at closing the breach and restoring order. (Cassandra being the right hand of the divine might have also helped a lot).
